People keep telling us to ‘guard your heart’, guard your heart, in case someone hurts you, in case you end up hurting yourself.
So what in the world does it mean to guard my heart? Do I set up a shield of impenetrable defence around it, a wall made of iron to keep it out of sight and safe; or do I place it in a glass casing, where everyone can see it beating and alive and yet reach out & touch nothing but cold hard glass?
C.S. Lewis (yes, it almost always works quoting famous dead people) once said: ‘To love at all is to be vulnerable’. How do we love and guard our hearts at the same time? Where do you place and position your heart so that it will never be wrung and broken?
